Thomas Emery Sr. started a tallow and candle business in 1840. A decade later, The Emery Candle Company offered customers sturdier, whiter, dripless candles made of stearic acid. Soon, the expanded product line also included elaine oil (oleic acid) and sweetwater (glycerine).
